Breast Thermography

Many of our patients cite concern for breast cancer as a significant stressor, and with cancer rates increasing, we understand that worry. Our office partners with X to Rays, LLC to offer an additional type of breast screening called Thermography. This type of screening is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows the examiner to visualize and quantify changes in skin surface temperature as affected by vascular and sympathetic nervous system changes. There is no radiation, no medications are used, and there is no physical contact or compression of the breast.

Breast Thermography offers women information that no other procedure can provide. However, breast Thermography is not a replacement for or alternative to mammography or any other form of breast imaging. Breast Thermography is a risk assessment tool that is meant to be used in addition to mammography and other tests or procedures. Breast Thermography and mammography are complementary procedures; one test does not replace the other. All Thermography reports are meant to identify thermal emissions that suggest potential risk markers only and do not in any way suggest diagnosis and/or treatment. Studies show that the earliest detection is realized when multiple tests are used together. This multimodal approach includes breast self-examinations, physical breast exams by a doctor, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, Thermography and other tests that may be ordered by your doctor.

Thermography is approved by the FDA as an adjunctive (additional) screening technique, not as a replacement to mammography. There are several technical reasons for this. Thermography is about equally sensitive as mammography but will still miss a small percent of cancers. Also, Thermography does not see inside but is looking for changes in the surface temperatures, patterns and growth of new blood vessels. Mammograms, ultrasound and MRI are all looking inside in an attempt to actually 'see' the tumor. This is why Thermography works very well together with the other screening techniques including CBE (Clinical Breast Exam). Study has shown that Thermography, mammography and CBE when used in combination can be very effective.
